Two months ago on the 4th of April, my Uncle was given a second chance at love when he wedded his beautiful bride Ms Valela, my new mommy at her family’s beautiful farm in Kensington, Bulawayo. Their union signified hope and the second chance that love symbolizes. inspired by their obvious love for each other, I wrote a poem to commemorate their beautiful day and with my partner in crime Kudzaishe Chidakwa on keyboard, we surprised them with a recital of the poem at the reception.

Daddy holding His Promise in his arms
Daddy holding His Promise in his arms

Have you ever been in love?
Have you heard the rush of angels’ wings?
Have you seen the purity of cherubic beings?
Have you heard the song that the goddess sings?
Not of wealth, diamond rings and cars
But of the joy that loving someone always brings

Now tell me have you ever been in love?
Have you seen rainbows tower over flooded waters?
Kaleidoscopes in a myriad of colors
Casting darkness away with concoctions of multiple wonders
See when God created man
He had blueprint of woman
To come after him and all his struggles
So she could be the rainbow and ever after wiping away his tears

And that’s why she would love him always
In and out
In and out
In and out
She remains by his side
In times of harmony and bliss
In times of merriment and happiness,
Fulfillment, plenty and riches
In and out
In and out
In and out
She remains by his side
Out of times of happiness
Into times of sickness
Times of pain and sadness,
Hurt, anger and faithlessness
Now tell me… have you ever been in love?

So now this question I ask ceases to be rhetoric
In the face of what we all have borne witness
The love that blossoms between two individuals
Now by his side daddy has his promise, his rainbow
To keep darkness at bay as well as his sorrow
And make today’s happiness a pale shadow
To that of tomorrow

Congratulations mummy and daddy!

Have You ever been in love?

Nothing can pull apart two hearts that love each other
